Leeds United reclaimed the top spot in the Championship with a commanding win over local rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road.
Manor Solomon opened the scoring just three minutes in, capitalizing on a mistake by Owls goalkeeper James Beadle, who failed to secure the ball while attempting to intercept a pass to Brenden Aaronson. Solomon calmly slotted the ball home despite two Wednesday defenders on the line.
Sheffield Wednesday, despite being without a recognized striker, pushed for an equalizer. Their best chance came when Illan Meslier expertly saved Djeidi Gassama’s low shot from 20 yards. However, Leeds’ defense, marshaled by Ethan Ampadu, held firm to deny further opportunities.
Late in the game, substitute Largie Ramazani doubled Leeds’ lead with a precise low strike from the edge of the area. Ao Tanaka added a touch of brilliance in stoppage time, flicking in Ramazani’s shot to seal the victory in style.
Leeds remain unbeaten at home since September, extending their impressive run to 18 matches against Yorkshire opponents. They now sit three points clear of third-placed Burnley in the Championship table.
For Sheffield Wednesday, the defeat capped a turbulent week. Owner Dejphon Chansiri, who faced protests from some Owls fans at Elland Road, revealed during a midweek forum that he had not spoken to manager Danny Rohl in January. Rohl expressed surprise at the comments, urging unity within the club.
The Owls, currently four points off the play-off spots in 10th place, will look to bounce back when they host Bristol City on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Leeds aim to extend their lead at the top when they face Norwich City the same night.
