Lewandowski double helps leaders Barcelona whip Sevilla

Robert Lewandowski continued his impressive form with a brace as Barcelona cruised past Sevilla, restoring their three-point lead in La Liga.

The 36-year-old striker, now with 14 goals in 12 games across all competitions, and 10 in his last six matches, led Hansi Flick’s team to an emphatic victory, responding to Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Celta Vigo the previous day.

Barcelona, winners of nine out of their first 10 league games, were 3-0 up by halftime for the third consecutive match. Lewandowski opened the scoring with a 24th-minute penalty after Raphinha was fouled by Peque Fernandez.

Pedri then added a spectacular second goal from the edge of the box, followed by Lewandowski’s second, tapping in from Raphinha’s assist moments after being denied by Orjan Nyland.

Lewandowski, now tied with Jimmy Greaves as the third-highest scorer in Europe’s top five leagues with 366 goals, sits behind only Cristiano Ronaldo (495) and Lionel Messi (496).

Pablo Torre added two late goals for Barcelona, either side of Stanis Idumbo’s consolation strike for Sevilla.

Torre, 21, scored a deflected fourth and netted a second from a direct free-kick, while Idumbo’s goal came from Sevilla’s only shot on target.

The home crowd at Barcelona’s temporary Olympic Stadium also celebrated Gavi’s return, 11 months after suffering a torn ACL.

Flick’s side, having bounced back from their first defeat of the season against Osasuna with dominant wins over Young Boys and Alaves, now face two crucial games next week: hosting Bayern Munich in the Champions League and visiting Real Madrid in La Liga.
