Liverpool FC staff party halted over drug fears

A Christmas party hosted by Liverpool FC for its non-footballing staff at the city’s Anglican Cathedral was cut short following reports of suspected drug paraphernalia being discovered.

In a statement, the club acknowledged an “incident” had occurred during the Thursday night event, emphasizing that it “does not condone or tolerate the use of illegal substances at any of our sites or events.”

The party, which did not include players or first-team manager Arne Slot, was halted by cathedral staff. The cathedral later stated that an “incident” had taken place which was “not in line with our values.”

Reports suggest the issue came to light after an attendee suffered a “medical episode,” prompting a search. Liverpool FC clarified that the staff member involved is “recovering well” after receiving hospital treatment, noting that the medical incident was “unrelated” to the concerns over suspected drug use.

Photos shared on social media by attendees showcased an opulent setup, with dining tables illuminated in red light and the Liverpool crest projected onto the cathedral’s walls.

A Liverpool FC statement said: “We do not condone or tolerate the use of illegal substances at any of our sites or events.

“We thank the events team at the venue for their swift action and professional response to the medical emergency which was unrelated.

“‘The member of staff is recovering well.”

Liverpool Cathedral, the largest in Britain and fifth largest in the world, said it hosts such events to help keep the site open and free to enter for the public.

A representative added: “During an event in the last week, an incident occurred that was not in line with our core values.

“The team on duty followed the correct procedures to bring the event to an early close.

“We want to thank our staff and Liverpool FC for the swift actions taken and partnership working, and will continue to review our procedures and mitigation measures for future events.”
