Ademola Lookman played a key role in Atalanta’s commanding Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
This win brings the Italian side to four points from their two group stage matches, following a goalless draw against Arsenal in their opening game.
The result seemed secure early on, as former Charlton and Everton forward Lookman set up the 21st-minute opener with a curling cross from the left, which Albania captain Berat Djimsiti flicked into the net.
Lookman, who had already hit the crossbar, extended Atalanta’s lead just before halftime, calmly placing Sead Kolasinac’s pass into the bottom corner.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men sealed the win three minutes into the second half when Raoul Bellanova nodded in Davide Zappacosta’s cross after Shakhtar’s defense hesitated.
Shakhtar, who are hosting their home matches at Schalke’s stadium due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, struggled to challenge Atalanta’s defense and remain with just one point from two games.
