Luis de la Fuente Extends Spain Contract Until 2028

Spain’s Euro 2024-winning coach, Luis de la Fuente, has extended his contract until 2028, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Monday.

The 63-year-old, who took over in 2022, led Spain to victory in the 2023 Nations League and last year’s European Championship final against England.

His new deal encompasses the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, as well as Euro 2028 in Britain and Ireland.

“I will continue on the same path, striving to improve and grow,” De la Fuente said at a press conference, expressing gratitude for the RFEF’s support.

De la Fuente previously coached Spain’s youth teams, winning European titles at under-19 and under-21 levels. He succeeded Luis Enrique after Spain’s early exit from the 2022 World Cup.

Spain, now four-time European champions, will begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign later this year and face the Netherlands in the Nations League quarter-finals in March.

“If I let euphoria take over, I could promise many things. Instead, I promise enthusiasm, effort, and work,” said De la Fuente.

Should he fulfil his extended contract, De la Fuente will become Spain’s longest-serving coach since Vicente del Bosque, who led the team to the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 victories.
