The former president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, was detained as part of a corruption probe.
Shortly after arriving in Madrid from the Dominican Republic, he was released following his detention.
He is suspected of receiving illegal kickbacks during negotiations for a lucrative agreement to host the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence, but Mr. Rubiales denies any wrongdoing.
Upon disembarking from the plane, he was escorted into a black van by several members of the Civil Guard. According to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, Mr. Rubiales may appear in court on Thursday.
Last month, while Mr. Rubiales was in the Dominican Republic, police searched his residence. Additionally, they conducted searches at the football federation headquarters and made multiple arrests.
Separately, Mr. Rubiales is facing trial for alleged sexual assault for kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth after last summer’s World Cup final.
Ms. Hermoso and her teammates asserted that the kiss was unwelcome and degrading. Mr. Rubiales was compelled to resign, but he maintains his innocence.
