Luton honour Lockyer in victory over Newcastle

Luton fulfills promise of creating a ‘special day’ for recovering captain Tom Lockyer with emotional victory against Newcastle United at Kenilworth Road.

Andros Townsend secures Hatters’ victory against former club in Luton’s first Premier League match since captain Tom Lockyer’s collapse at Bournemouth a week prior.

In a poignant gesture, Townsend displayed Lockyer’s number four shirt in celebration, joining other tributes from Luton players and fans throughout the game.

Despite hitting the woodwork twice, with Ross Barkley’s long-range effort and Jacob Brown’s close-range attempt, Luton held on for the win.

Newcastle, facing their fourth consecutive away league defeat, saw an Alexander Isak goal disallowed for a marginal offside, while Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon had close chances.

The result leaves Newcastle in seventh place, while Luton, now 18th, are within two points of safety with a game in hand over Nottingham Forest, the team directly above them.
