James Maddison will not be part of England’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024.
The Tottenham midfielder was initially included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man roster.
He played in England’s friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, coming off the bench in the 3-0 victory at St James’ Park.
However, he is one of seven players who will be cut when the final squad is announced on Saturday.
The 27-year-old, who has earned seven senior caps, was part of Southgate’s squad for the 2022 World Cup but did not make an appearance in Qatar.
Maddison joined Tottenham in a £40 million transfer from Leicester last summer, but after a strong start, his season was marred by injuries, leading to inconsistent performances.
He is now excluded from the squad heading to Germany for Euro 2024, with Southgate needing to drop six more players.
The final squad for the tournament will be revealed on Saturday, following England’s last warm-up friendly against Iceland at Wembley the night before.
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, who returned to training on Wednesday after a long injury lay-off, is not ruled out of the squad.
