A Real Mallorca fan who racially abused Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. and former Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze has received a 12-month suspended prison sentence from a Spanish court.

In a statement, Real Madrid confirmed that the supporter, who has also been banned from stadiums for three years, had his sentence suspended after apologizing to the Brazil international in a letter and completing anti-discrimination training.

“Real Madrid will keep working to protect the club’s values and eradicate any racist behaviour in the world of football and sport,” said the La Liga giants.

Madrid also reported that another Mallorca supporter, a minor, who racially abused midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, has been banned from stadiums for a year.

The abuse directed at Vinicius Jr. took place during Madrid’s 1-0 La Liga loss to Real Mallorca at their Son Moix stadium in February 2023. Two weeks later, the same individual hurled racial slurs at Nigeria international Chukwueze, who is now with AC Milan.

This marks the third criminal conviction in recent months for racist insults aimed at Real Madrid players, particularly Vinicius, who has faced abuse in stadiums across Spain since arriving in 2018.

In June, three Valencia fans received eight-month prison sentences for racist abuse directed at the 24-year-old at Mestalla Stadium in May 2023.

Earlier in September, Vinicius urged that Spain be stripped of its 2030 World Cup hosting rights unless significant progress is made regarding racism in stadiums.

On Sunday, Real Madrid will visit city rivals Atletico at the Metropolitano Stadium, where Vinicius has also previously encountered racist abuse.
