Mallorca midfielder Sergi Darder netted the crucial penalty in the shootout against Real Sociedad, securing his team’s spot in the Copa del Rey final.
Following a goalless first leg, Mikel Oyarzabal of Sociedad nullified Giovanni Gonzalez’s opener, leading to extra time.
In the ensuing shootout, Oyarzabal’s miss was decisive, while Darder maintained composure to guide Mallorca to victory.
This marks Mallorca’s first appearance in the final since their tournament triumph in 2003.
They are set to face either Athletic Bilbao or Atletico Madrid at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville on 6 April. Athletic Bilbao currently holds a 1-0 advantage over Diego Simeone’s side ahead of Thursday’s second leg.
Mallorca’s triumph on Tuesday may inject a morale boost for a team currently positioned 16th in La Liga, striving to distance themselves from relegation concerns.
Meanwhile, Real Sociedad will need to regroup for their upcoming Champions League last-16 clash with Paris St-Germain, as the French champions hold a 2-0 lead from the first leg.
