Manchester United has announced Portuguese midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, as the club’s new captain after demoting Harry Maguire.
Fernandes has been the de facto captain after Ten Hag ended the defender’s automatic selection after two matches last season.
On Sunday, England star Harry Maguire stated via social media that United manager Erik ten Hag had removed him of the captaincy.
Fernandes has 64 goals and 54 assists in 185 United games since signing in January 2020, and he has twice been named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.
His first game as captain will be against Arsenal on Saturday night, as part of United’s pre-season tour of the United States.
The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on multiple occasions, and Erik ten Hag has announced that he will now lead the squad on a regular basis, according to a club statement.
Since joining the club in 2020, Fernando has scored 64 goals and provided 54 assists in 185 appearances.
A club statement confirming Fernandes’ new role said: The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team on a permanent basis.
“As captain, the two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to drive the highest standards throughout the squad as United push for success in the 2023-24 season and beyond.”
