Man Utd crisis deepens as Carrick faces growing pressure after Spurs draw

Michael Carrick admitted Manchester United struggled to influence their 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, with the club enduring their worst start to a league season in 40 years and questions mounting over the manager’s ability to turn things around.

“We couldn’t find a way to get ourselves into the game. With the ball, without the ball, we were off it,” Carrick said after Saturday’s encounter.

United’s disappointing performance raised further concerns about their inability to protect leads, overcome opponents reduced to 10 men and produce consistent displays. Despite facing several questions after the match, Carrick offered few detailed explanations for the team’s struggles.

Although the manager bears some responsibility, his players have also failed to deliver a complete performance this season, relying instead on isolated moments of individual brilliance rather than collective organisation.

The uncertainty has left supporters increasingly frustrated, with three separate rounds of boos heard at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Former United captain Gary Neville believes the supporters remain behind the club’s long-term project but warned that their patience is wearing thin.

“I think the fans will stay with the project,” Neville said. “I don’t think the boos are against Michael Carrick for one minute. But what I would say is, they’re turning quite quickly.”

Carrick was appointed to provide stability and direction, drawing on his playing career, which was built around composure and control. However, the current team has struggled to reflect those qualities.

Midfield struggles raise fresh concerns

United’s midfield has emerged as one of their biggest weaknesses, despite significant investment in the department during the summer transfer window.

The partnership between Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans has yet to deliver the expected results, while Andrey Santos has struggled to secure regular playing time.

There was optimism surrounding Carlos Baleba’s return to action following an injury-disrupted start to the season. His introduction after an hour lifted the atmosphere inside Old Trafford, with the midfielder producing a positive display.

Baleba completed 16 of his 18 passes and created two chances, matching Bruno Fernandes’ total for the entire match.

However, United’s defensive weaknesses extended beyond midfield, as Tottenham repeatedly found space to exploit across the pitch.

The visitors won possession in United’s final third five times during the first half alone, despite five of the home side’s starters having remained at their clubs during the international break.

Tottenham also demonstrated their attacking quality through quick, one-touch passing combinations that allowed them to progress through the thirds with pace and precision.

Savio attempted 10 dribbles, completing five, as he repeatedly challenged United’s defenders and exposed their vulnerability.

United struggle against 10 men again

Questions have also resurfaced about United’s mentality after they once again failed to take advantage of a numerical superiority.

Despite Tottenham playing with 10 men for 21 minutes, including stoppage time, United struggled to control the match and were unable to secure the victory.

Carrick acknowledged the importance of managing games when ahead but did not offer a clear solution to the recurring problems.

“If we’re ahead in the game, we have to see it out,” he said.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi highlighted the importance of determination in football, saying: “Football is character.”

United must now find a way to improve their performances, restore confidence and address their recurring weaknesses as the Premier League competition intensifies.

Man Utd’s next five fixtures

United face a demanding run of matches, with four of their next five games scheduled away from home, including their next three fixtures.

October 13: Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United — Champions League

October 18: Leeds United vs Manchester United — Premier League

October 21: Como vs Manchester United — Champions League

October 25: Manchester United vs Bournemouth — Premier League

October 31: Chelsea vs Manchester United — Premier League

With pressure building and difficult fixtures ahead, Carrick faces an important period in which United must demonstrate greater consistency, stronger organisation and the character needed to turn their season around.
