England goalkeeper Mary Earps has expressed that Manchester United are entering a phase of transition that does not match her current career trajectory.
The 31-year-old is set to move to Paris St-Germain following United’s announcement of her departure on a free transfer at the end of her contract.
Despite receiving a new contract offer from United, Earps ultimately declined it after careful consideration.
“The club is about to undergo a period of transition, and unfortunately I don’t feel it aligns with the timing of where I’m at in my career,” Earps posted on Instagram.
“I think now is the right time to make a change and embark on a new challenge.”
The goalkeeper mentioned she deliberated extensively on the decision, describing it as one she did not take lightly.
Earps joins several notable players departing Manchester United on free transfers recently, including Alessia Russo who moved to Arsenal and Ona Batlle who joined Barcelona.
This week, United also confirmed the departure of captain Katie Zelem, who was not offered a new contract, and Spain forward Lucia Garcia, who signed with Mexican side Monterrey.
Following a fifth-place finish in the WSL last season, United acknowledge they are currently unable to compete for the league title or in the Champions League.
Established in 2018, the women’s team moved into a new £10m training facility in 2023. However, the club intends to renovate their Carrington training base, which will disrupt operations for all teams at the site.
