Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes took another setback as they were held to a draw by West Ham, leaving them nine points behind leaders Arsenal.
The result proved vital for West Ham, who climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time since December after earning a hard-fought point.
Match Report
The match was tense and lacked overall quality, with the key moments coming during a brief burst of action in the first half when two goals were scored within four minutes.
City captain Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock in the 31st minute with a moment of clever improvisation. Driving into the penalty area from the left, he noticed West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen stepping forward in anticipation of a cross and delicately chipped the ball toward the far post. Whether the Portuguese midfielder intended the pass for Erling Haaland or was aiming directly for goal, the ball ended up in the net.
West Ham responded quickly, equalising just four minutes later with their only shot on target. Jarrod Bowen delivered a corner that was powerfully headed home by Konstantinos Mavropanos. The former Arsenal defender, who had not scored for the club in three years, rose above the defence to find the net. His goal came with help from City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who misjudged the cross while attempting to claim it.
Antoine Semenyo nearly put West Ham ahead before halftime with a low effort that narrowly missed the target. Shortly before the hour mark, Hermansen produced an excellent save to deny Haaland in a one-on-one situation.
City pushed late for a winner, and Rayan Cherki came close when his free kick struck the crossbar near the end of the match. However, it summed up a frustrating evening for Pep Guardiola’s side, who appeared short on confidence after their 3–0 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid earlier in the week.
For West Ham, the point was significant. It lifted them out of the relegation zone after 100 days and marked just their fourth point from the last 21 league meetings with Manchester City, while Nottingham Forest slipped into the bottom three.
