Manchester United have named Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.

The 39-year-old Portuguese manager will leave Sporting Lisbon to join United on November 11, under a contract extending to June 2027.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, former United striker who stepped in as interim manager following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday, will remain in charge for the next three matches.

Amorim becomes United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson ended his 26-year tenure upon retirement in 2013.

In a statement, the club said that “Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football”.

Sporting has confirmed that Manchester United will pay €11 million (£9.25 million) to activate the release clause in Ruben Amorim’s contract.

Amorim’s debut match with United is scheduled for November 24, following the international break, in a Premier League game against newly promoted Ipswich.

His first home fixture will be in the Europa League against Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt on November 28, followed by a league match against Everton the subsequent weekend.

Manchester United will announce Amorim’s coaching staff details in the coming days.

Since a Super Cup defeat to Porto on August 3, Amorim has led Sporting, last season’s Primeira Liga champions, on a 14-game unbeaten run.

He is set to be in charge for Sporting’s home league game against Estrela on Friday (20:15 GMT), followed by a Champions League home fixture against Manchester City on Tuesday.

His final match with Sporting is expected to be against his former club Braga on November 10, before the Nations League break.

Amorim joins Manchester United with the club currently placed 14th in the Premier League and 21st out of 36 in the Europa League standings.

Known as one of Europe’s most promising managers, Amorim began his coaching career with Casa Pia in 2018 before moving to Braga, where he quickly progressed from managing the B team to the first team.

In his brief tenure at Braga, Amorim achieved the club’s first away win over Benfica in 65 years and led them to victory in the Taca da Liga cup final against Porto.
