Manchester United extend Maguire Contract

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has confirmed that the club have triggered a one-year extension to Harry Maguire’s contract, while discussions for a new deal with winger Amad Diallo are close to being finalised.

Maguire, 31, had been linked with a possible departure following reduced playing time and the loss of the captaincy in July 2023 under former manager Erik ten Hag. His contract had been due to expire on 30 June 2024.

Speaking on Friday ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool, Amorim said, “For Harry Maguire, we are going to trigger our option. I spoke with him this morning and told him he has to improve on the pitch; we need him a lot.”

Amorim highlighted Maguire’s leadership qualities, adding, “When you look at our team, we are crying out for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, but he needs to improve in that regard and also his overall game. We are happy to continue.”

On Amad, Amorim expressed confidence about securing the 22-year-old winger’s long-term future. Amad’s current contract is also set to expire this summer.

The Ivorian has been a key player this season, notably scoring the winner in the Manchester derby.

“Amad’s deal is near,” Amorim confirmed, underlining the winger’s importance to his plans.

In a related update, Amorim ruled Marcus Rashford out of the trip to Anfield due to illness.

The forward had missed several recent matchday squads but returned as a substitute in Monday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
