Manchester United make official approach to Ashworth

Manchester United have formally approached Newcastle regarding their interest in hiring Dan Ashworth as their sporting director.

The Red Devils consider Ashworth a primary target as part of efforts by the Ineos Group to reshape the club’s organizational framework.

Earlier in the day, Newcastle announced that Ashworth had been placed on gardening leave at his request.

Manchester United believe they hold a strong bargaining position, considering that Newcastle would still need to compensate the 52-year-old during his leave.

Nevertheless, Newcastle also feel confident in their position, given Manchester United’s eagerness to recruit Ashworth, widely regarded as one of football’s most proficient sporting directors.

The Magpies have Ashworth under contract until 2025, with clauses preventing him from joining another club unless suitable compensation is agreed upon.

They anticipate requesting a fee from Manchester United well exceeding £10 million, believing it to be within their rights.

The Old Trafford outfit, on the other hand, are determined they will not be forced to overpay.

Darren Eales, Newcastle United’s chief executive, said: “We are naturally disappointed that Dan has chosen to leave. However, our exciting journey doesn’t stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately.

“We thank Dan for his efforts at Newcastle United and we wish him and his family well for the future.”

While Ashworth is widely respected, there have been indications from sources at St James’ Park suggesting he bears some responsibility for the £55 million acquisition of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan in July.

Tonali featured in just 12 matches for Newcastle before receiving a 10-month ban for violating gambling regulations in Italy, rendering him ineligible to play until August.

Should Ineos, poised to confirm their 25% ownership of Manchester United this week, finalize a deal for Ashworth, it would mark another significant move by the conglomerate.

It’s understood that Ashworth is interested in joining Old Trafford, having forged a relationship with Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford during his tenure in a previous role at the Football Association.

In 2017, Ashworth was instrumental in England’s triumphs at youth level, securing victories in both the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups.

Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in guiding Brighton’s ascent in the Premier League, notably overseeing the appointment of Graham Potter as manager following Chris Hughton’s dismissal.

After departing Brighton, Ashworth briefly took a hiatus before assuming his position at Newcastle in 2022.
