Manchester United want Osimhen, Zirkzee swap deal
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, with underperforming forward Joshua Zirkzee potentially included in a player-plus-cash deal to facilitate the transfer.
Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has impressed during the 2024-25 campaign, registering eight goals and four assists in nine appearances for the Turkish club. Despite speculation about a possible January recall, the 25-year-old is expected to return to Napoli next summer as planned.
The Nigerian international’s departure from Napoli came after a summer of transfer uncertainty, with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain among the clubs most interested in securing his services. Offers from Saudi Arabia were also reportedly tabled, but Osimhen rejected them, prioritising a future in European football.
Chelsea and Arsenal remain keen on Osimhen, but Manchester United have now entered the race. Reports suggest new United manager Ruben Amorim views Osimhen as a key target and could propose a deal involving Zirkzee to tempt Napoli.
Journalist’s Insight
Speaking to Area Napoli, journalist Gerardo Fasano said:
“Manchester United are said to be on Victor Osimhen’s trail. Amorim could include Zirkzee in the negotiations. Money plus Zirkzee for Osimhen could appeal to Napoli, particularly as Zirkzee might complement Romelu Lukaku in the future.”
Fasano also noted that Juventus are monitoring Zirkzee, with coach Thiago Motta reportedly keen on reuniting with the former Bologna striker, whom he previously helped develop.
Struggles in United’s Attack
United’s striking options have been underwhelming this season, with Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund managing just three goals between them in all competitions. Zirkzee, in particular, has struggled, failing to score since the opening game of the Premier League campaign.
While Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyökeres remains a primary target for United, Osimhen’s name has emerged as a serious alternative. The Nigerian’s proven record—76 goals and 18 assists in 133 matches for Napoli—makes him an appealing option.
Perfect Outcome?
Osimhen’s loan spell at Galatasaray has only bolstered his reputation, while Zirkzee has yet to establish himself as a long-term prospect at Old Trafford. A deal involving Zirkzee could be mutually beneficial, providing Napoli with a promising player and United with the prolific striker they desperately need.
With Chelsea, Arsenal, and Juventus also monitoring the situation, the race for Osimhen is expected to intensify in the coming months.
