Marseille has dismissed manager Gennaro Gattuso after his tenure lasted less than five months.
The Italian assumed control of the French club in late September and departs with the team positioned ninth in Ligue 1.
At the age of 46, Gattuso exits after securing only nine victories out of 24 matches as the manager.
During his tenure, Marseille suffered six defeats, the most recent being a 1-0 loss to second-placed Brest on Sunday.
“Olympique de Marseille announces the end of its collaboration with Gennaro Gattuso,” Marseille said in a statement.
“Marseille would like to extend its special thanks to Gennaro and his entire staff for the unfailing commitment and professionalism they have shown on a daily basis, and wishes them all the best for the future.”
Gattuso arrived at Marseille as a replacement for Marcelino, now the manager of Villarreal, who himself had only been in charge in the south of France for three months.
As a player, Gattuso achieved the pinnacle by winning the World Cup with Italy in 2006. He also has managerial experience with AC Milan, Napoli, and Valencia.
Despite a sluggish start in France, Marseille saw a surge in form with four consecutive league victories in December, propelling them to sixth place in the standings.
However, Marseille’s recent Ligue 1 performance has been lackluster, failing to secure a win in their last six matches, with four draws.
During Gattuso’s tenure at the Stade Velodrome, he oversaw 15 league matches, winning five, drawing five, and losing five.
Their disappointment extended to the Coupe de France, where they were eliminated last month after a penalty shootout loss to Rennes, a fellow league competitor.
Despite the downturn, Marseille maintains their position in the Europa League. After finishing second in Group B behind English newcomers Brighton, Marseille faces Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the second leg of their knockout round play-off match on Thursday (20:00 GMT), following a 2-2 draw last week.
