Marseille have signed forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United in a deal worth up to 31.6 million euros (£26.6 million), with a contract running until 2029.
Greenwood, 22, came through United’s academy but has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022. He spent last season on loan at Getafe.
Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.
The announcement of Marseille’s intention to sign Greenwood drew criticism from the city’s mayor. Greenwood made his senior debut for United in 2019 as a substitute against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.
During his time at United, he scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned his only England cap in 2020.
In August 2023, United announced Greenwood’s departure by mutual agreement following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. He joined La Liga side Getafe the following month, scoring 10 goals and making six assists in 36 appearances.
United, who wished Greenwood well on their website, have included a significant sell-on clause in the deal with Marseille.
Marseille is set to play Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on 3 August at Bradford City’s Valley Parade, as the Stadium of Light is unavailable due to renovation work.
Greenwood, born in Bradford, could make his first appearance back in England since his arrest in January 2022 following online allegations.
