Mason Greenwood suffers blow as Jose Mourinho rejects him

Mason Greenwood‘s attempts to resume his professional football career have been dealt a series of setbacks as he has been rejected by several clubs.

Greenwood was officially released by Manchester United earlier this week following the club’s internal investigation, which was met with widespread criticism from fans.

The striker’s last game of football was in January 2022, when his career took a turn for the worse after he was accused of sexual assault and coercive behavior. He was arrested and charged with these offenses and is currently awaiting trial.

Manchester United’s statement

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges against Mason Greenwood in February, but he was still not allowed to play football by Manchester United. The club’s CEO, Richard Arnold, said that he was convinced that Greenwood did not commit the offenses, but he believed that it was better for Greenwood to continue his career elsewhere to maintain the unity of the club.

Arnold said, “While I am satisfied that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with, Mason’s accepted that he has made mistakes which he takes responsibility for. This case has provoked strong opinions, and it is my responsibility to minimize any distraction to the unity we are seeking within the club.”

There had been earlier reports that Jose Mourinho was considering signing Greenwood for AS Roma, but the Italian club has now distanced itself from a possible move. This is despite reports that Mourinho had personally spoken to Greenwood.

Saudi Arabia, which has been a major attraction for talents this summer, also believes that Greenwood would be “too toxic” for what they are trying to build. Steven Gerrard, who is in charge of Al-Ettifaq, has already dismissed the reports of a possible move as “fake news.”
