Mateta net brace as Crystal Palace defeat Newcastle

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored twice as Crystal Palace defeated Newcastle at Selhurst Park, securing another season of Premier League football for the Eagles.

Mateta opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second half, combining with Jordan Ayew before calmly slotting the ball past Martin Dubravka.

He sealed the win with his second goal two minutes from the end, converting a pass from Will Hughes for his 11th league goal of the season.

Newcastle’s best opportunity came in the first half when Alexander Isak was sent through on goal, but Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson rushed out to block the shot.

The Magpies felt they should have been awarded a penalty late in the second half when Sean Longstaff went down after a challenge from Will Hughes, but VAR did not overturn the on-field decision.

This victory marks Palace’s third consecutive win, allowing them to shift their focus towards climbing the table rather than worrying about relegation, as they prepare for a club-record 12th season in the Premier League.
