Mbeumo scores retaken penalty as Brentford defeat Crystal Palace
Brentford picked up just their second away win of the Premier League season as they scored two second-half goals to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
They took the lead after they were awarded a penalty when Maxence Lacroix brought down Nathan Collins.
Bryan Mbeumo’s spot-kick hit the post with Marc Guehi clearing the ball, but a retake was ordered by the video assistant referee because the Palace captain encroached into the area before the penalty was taken.
On his second chance, Mbeumo sent Dean Henderson the wrong way to give Brentford the lead, with Yoane Wissa celebrating before the forward had even kicked the ball.
Kevin Schade headed in a cross from Mikkel Damsgaard for the Bees’ second goal, but Palace pulled one back soon after when Romain Esse, making his debut after signing from Millwall, tapped in at the back post.
Before the penalty incident, Palace had chances through Jean-Philippe Mateta, with his shot saved by Mark Flekken, and a Eberechi Eze free-kick that was deflected and hit the post.
Keane Lewis-Potter went close for Brentford before Mbeumo’s opener when his curling cross nearly caught out Henderson, but the Palace keeper did well to tip the ball over the bar.
Brentford’s win moves them four points ahead of Palace in 11th place.
The Bees’ fortunes have slowed down after their strong start to the season and they came into this game with just one win in their past nine matches.
Thomas Frank always sets his side up positively and the attacking trio of Mbeumo, Schade and Wissa kept the Palace backline on their toes throughout the game.
Five of the seven Premier League meetings between Palace and Brentford had ended in draws and the Bees had to weather a late storm after Esse’s goal to ensure it did not happen again.
Crystal Palace have turned their season around after their tricky start, and they came into this match with just one defeat in their past 11 league games.
The Eagles have a clear gameplan under Oliver Glasner and play an intense style of football, getting the ball forward at the earliest opportunity.
That style has coincided with Jean-Philippe Mateta playing the best football of his career. Since Glasner was appointed nearly a year ago, striker Mateta has scored 21 league goals, only one fewer than Mohammed Salah of Liverpool in the same time.
However, Palace did not create chances freely in this match and their best opportunities came when they were launching balls into the box to try to get level late on.
One positive was the impact of £14.5m signing Esse.
The 19-year-old scored just two minutes after coming on for his debut and Palace will be hoping that it is the start of a bright career.
