Messi scores twice as Inter Miami win MLS Shield

Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi scored twice in a 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew, helping the club secure their first-ever MLS Supporters’ Shield.

The Argentine playmaker opened the scoring with a close-range effort and added a second just before halftime with a brilliant free-kick.

Columbus Crew’s winger Diego Rossi reduced the deficit in Ohio, but former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez restored Miami’s two-goal advantage. Despite a late penalty from Cucho Hernandez, Inter Miami held on for the win.

This victory ensures that Miami will finish top of the table, earning them the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the MLS team with the best regular-season record, marking a significant milestone for the club since their debut in 2020.

The trophy is Messi’s 46th in his illustrious career for both club and country.

By topping the standings, Miami has secured home-field advantage in the upcoming post-season playoffs.

“The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what’s next,” said Messi.

“The first round is three games but then it’s one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home.”

Miami needs two wins from their final two league matches to break the MLS record for the most points in a regular season, currently held by the New England Revolution with 73 points, set in 2021.
