Mikel applauds Lookman for choosing Nigeria over England

Former Nigeria captain Mikel Obi has praised Ademola Lookman for choosing to represent Nigeria over England in his senior international football career.

Speaking on ESPN, Mikel lauded the Atalanta forward for making the decision early in his career, contrasting it with some players born outside Nigeria who delay their commitment until they are no longer considered by their birth countries. He criticized those who turn to Nigeria as a fallback option later in their careers.

“If you decide to wait and pursue opportunities with Germany or England, then commit to that decision. Don’t wait until you are past your best and use Nigeria as a second choice,” said Mikel, who netted six goals in 91 appearances for Nigeria between 2005 and 2019, and led the U-23 team to bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Mikel also highlighted Lookman’s rapid switch to Nigeria, noting, “Lookman made the right choice early on by saying, ‘I’m going to represent my African country. I’m going to play for Nigeria.’ He’s had an outstanding season and played excellently at the last AFCON. What a fantastic player he’s been. Fair play to him.”

Lookman, who previously represented England at U-19, U-20, and U-21 levels, switched his allegiance to Nigeria in 2022. Since then, he has scored eight goals in 25 appearances for the Super Eagles.

Lookman has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers in recent years, particularly at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where his crucial goals helped the team reach the final against the hosts.
