In a dramatic finish at The Hawthorns, Jayson Molumby delivered a 96th-minute winner for West Bromwich Albion, denying Sheffield Wednesday a last-ditch point.
Earlier, Callum Paterson had equalized in the 93rd minute after Adam Armstrong appeared to seal victory with a classy goal on his Albion debut 16 minutes from time.
The result extended Albion’s unbeaten home streak to 11 matches and lifted Tony Mowbray’s side to fifth place in the Championship.
Armstrong, who also struck the post, was a standout in a first half dominated by the hosts. Meanwhile, Owls keeper James Beadle kept his side in contention, denying Torbjorn Heggem and Isaac Price, while Joe Wildsmith made a crucial save at the other end from the lively Djeidi Gassama. The latter had a second-half goal ruled out for offside, leaving Wednesday frustrated.
Tony Mowbray handed Armstrong his debut, while Joe Wildsmith took over as goalkeeper following Alex Palmer’s move to Ipswich. Defender Kyle Bartley returned to captain Albion, but illness sidelined Mason Holgate. For Wednesday, Barry Bannan’s injury absence was a significant blow, with Stuart Armstrong among the new faces in Danny Rohl’s reshuffled lineup.
Albion dominated the early exchanges, with chances falling to Karlan Grant and Heggem. The visitors, however, almost snatched a goal before halftime, as Gassama’s low strike was tipped around the post by Wildsmith.
The second half saw more drama, including Marvin Johnson’s defensive heroics and Gassama’s disallowed goal, which enraged Owls boss Danny Rohl. Substitutes Pol Valentin and Svante Ingelsson briefly lifted Wednesday, but it was Albion who struck first when Armstrong volleyed in Fellows’ cross to put the hosts ahead.
Wednesday refused to back down, and Paterson’s persistence paid off in the 93rd minute, scoring on the rebound after Wildsmith parried Ingelsson’s cross. However, Molumby’s late flick from a Johnston corner sealed the victory, igniting wild celebrations.
The match ended on a sour note, as tempers flared post-whistle, resulting in Kyle Bartley receiving a red card for an altercation with Ingelsson.
