Monaco spoil Luis Enrique’s PSG contract celebration with shock win

Luis Enrique could not mark his contract extension with a victory as Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 2-1 defeat to Monaco at the Parc des Princes.

PSG’s two-time Champions League-winning manager recently signed a new deal keeping him at the club until 2030, but the occasion ended in disappointment as Monaco came from behind to claim all three points.

Marquinhos gave the European champions the lead in the first half, but Flavio Nazinho and Stanis Idumbo struck after the break to hand Monaco their third consecutive Ligue 1 victory and maintain their perfect start to the season.

Before kick-off, PSG also announced contract extensions for several key players, with Willian Pacho, Joao Neves, Senny Mayulu and Beraldo committing their futures until 2031, while Fabian Ruiz signed a deal until 2028.

PSG started brightly, with Lukas Hradecky producing an excellent reflex save to deny Desire Doue in the 11th minute. Joao Neves and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also came close shortly afterwards but failed to find the target.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the half-hour mark. Monaco failed to properly clear a corner, allowing Kvaratskhelia to receive the ball inside the box before his powerful cross was awkwardly turned home by Marquinhos.

Monaco, however, weathered further pressure early in the second half before finding an equaliser in the 58th minute. Nazinho rose at the back post to head home Teze’s cross.

The visitors completed the turnaround in the 72nd minute after catching PSG on the counterattack. Idumbo showed impressive skill to get past Achraf Hakimi before firing beyond Matvey Safonov at the near post.

Luis Enrique introduced Ousmane Dembele, Ferran Torres and Mika Godts as PSG searched for a late response, but Monaco held firm. Hradecky made another crucial save in stoppage time to deny Dembele and secure the victory.

Hradecky inspires Monaco’s perfect start

Monaco were the only side to win their opening two Ligue 1 matches before Friday’s encounter, and their impressive start under Filipe Luis continued with a statement victory over the defending champions.

The visitors were clinical in front of goal, scoring from both of their shots on target. Their four attempts produced an expected goals figure of just 0.52, compared with PSG’s 2.19 xG from 23 attempts.

Hradecky played a major role in the result, making nine saves to frustrate PSG’s attackers throughout the contest. Only Stephane Ruffier, who made 10 saves against PSG in January 2010, has recorded more saves for Monaco in a single Ligue 1 match since Opta began collecting the data in the 2006-07 season.

The victory means Monaco have won their opening three league matches for the ninth time in the club’s history, with only PSG having achieved the feat more often.

Meanwhile, PSG have now gone three Ligue 1 matches without a victory, drawing twice and losing once, marking their worst start to a league campaign since the 2012-13 season.
