Alex Mowatt scored twice to lead West Bromwich Albion to the top of the Championship with a 3-0 win at Portsmouth.

The Baggies now sit above Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, and Burnley with 13 points from five games.

Josh Maja opened the scoring in the first minute, with Mowatt adding a brilliant second-half finish and a late free-kick to secure the victory for Carlos Corberan’s side.

Portsmouth, who are struggling at the bottom of the league, remain winless this season, facing a challenging set of fixtures upon their return to the second tier.

West Brom started strongly with Maja’s early goal, as Tom Fellows delivered a pass from the right-hand side of the Portsmouth box, allowing Maja to score and celebrate in front of the ecstatic West Brom fans.

Portsmouth responded well, nearly equalizing when Callum Lang pressured the Baggies defense but missed his shot.

West Brom thought they had doubled their lead when Maja’s close-range header was spectacularly saved by Will Norris, who kept the ball from crossing the line.

In the second half, Mowatt extended the lead with a superb strike from the edge of the box into the top left corner.

Portsmouth’s Josh Murphy came close to scoring with a shot that narrowly missed Alex Palmer’s far post just after the hour mark.

Mowatt sealed the win in injury time with his second goal, curling a stunning free-kick into the top right corner.

A bright spot for Portsmouth was the return of defender Regan Poole, who was back in action after a 10-month recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
