Musiala goal helps Bayern Munich to vital victory over Benfica
Bayern Munich snapped their two-game losing streak in the Champions League with a narrow victory over Benfica.
Jamal Musiala scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute, heading in Harry Kane’s cross from close range.
Bayern controlled the match against a cautious Benfica side, with both Kane and Serge Gnabry forcing key saves in the first half.
Second-half substitute Leroy Sane also saw two attempts denied by Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
The German side needed a strong showing after recent European setbacks. After a commanding 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in their opener, they suffered a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa and a 4-1 defeat to Barcelona.
Returning to the Allianz Arena, Vincent Kompany’s team earned a crucial win, climbing back into the top 24 of the League Phase standings, now positioned 17th and level on points with Benfica, who sit 19th.
Musiala’s fine form lifts Munich after bad start
Bayern may be rebounding from a dip in European form, but they currently top the Bundesliga by three points and have won their last four games, scoring 16 goals without conceding.
Jamal Musiala has been pivotal in this impressive run, once again causing trouble for defenders with his dynamic runs on Wednesday night, which opened up space for his teammates.
The German midfielder has now scored five goals in his last four games across all competitions, with three of those goals coming from headers—a notable feat, considering he had only scored two headers for Bayern prior to this streak.
The 21-year-old continues to earn admiration from Bayern fans, who gave him a standing ovation when he was substituted for Thomas Muller in the final minutes.
