Newcastle preserved their unbeaten start to the season with a thrilling victory over Tottenham at a lively St James’ Park.

The hosts took the lead in the 37th minute when Harvey Barnes expertly controlled a tricky side-footed finish, following a strong run and pull-back from Lloyd Kelly on the left wing.

Tottenham equalized in the 56th minute after Pedro Porro’s shot was deflected onto the crossbar. Half-time substitute Brennan Johnson saw his attempt inadvertently diverted into the net by Newcastle defender Dan Burn.

Spurs continued to press, with keeper Nick Pope making a crucial save to deny James Maddison’s curled shot and Johnson firing over the bar.

Despite the pressure from Tottenham, Newcastle regained the lead with 12 minutes remaining. Joelinton initiated the play with impressive midfield work, setting up substitute Jacob Murphy.

Murphy’s low cross found Alexander Isak, who scored the decisive goal.

Additionally, Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali made his first Premier League appearance since October, following a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.

The 24-year-old received a standing ovation from the home fans when he came on as a second-half substitute.
