Carlo Ancelotti has indicated that Neymar could still earn a place in Brazil national football team’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, despite being omitted from the team’s squad for the next round of international friendlies.

Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances, has not featured for the Selecao since 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 34-year-old recently admitted he is taking his career one year at a time and has even considered retiring from professional football. However, he also made it clear that he still hopes to compete in the World Cup.

The forward has already participated in three editions of the tournament, and the next one could represent his final opportunity to win the title with Brazil, who are aiming for their first World Cup triumph since 2002.

Neymar recently played the full 90 minutes in Santos FC’s 1-1 draw with Corinthians on Sunday. Two of Ancelotti’s assistants were present at the match, though Neymar was unable to make a decisive impact.

Speaking on Monday, Ancelotti explained the decision to leave him out for now.

“Neymar is not at 100 percent, and therefore he is not on the list,” Ancelotti said. “Neymar is not at 100 percent of his capability.

“If he can be at 100 percent physically, he can be there. Neymar could be at the World Cup.

“Neymar has to keep working, playing, showcasing his qualities and maintaining good physical condition.”

Meanwhile, Ancelotti also handed a recall to Endrick, who returned to the national team setup for the first time since the Italian manager replaced Dorival Junior. The young striker has impressed during his loan spell with Olympique Lyonnais, scoring six goals in 12 appearances across competitions.

Other new faces in the squad include Igor Thiago of Brentford FC, who earned his first call-up after strong performances this season, and Rayan from AFC Bournemouth.

Leo Pereira of CR Flamengo and Gabriel Sara from Galatasaray SK were also included for the first time in the 26-man squad, while Estevão Willian missed out as he continues his recovery from injury.

Brazil are set to face France national football team on March 26 before meeting Croatia national football team three days later. These matches will be the final fixtures before Ancelotti announces his definitive World Cup squad on May 18.

The five-time world champions will begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco national football team on June 13, before also facing Scotland national football team and Haiti national football team in Group C.
