The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officially approved the alteration of the name of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), paving the way for its use in the upcoming 2023/24 season.
This decision was formalized during the 79th general assembly of the nation’s football governing body, which took place on Sunday in Uyo.
“The congress approved the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League,” NFF said in a communique.
The recently constituted NPFL board introduced the league as the Nigeria Premier Football League, unveiling a fresh logo and name. However, the NFF maintained that only the Congress held the authority to alter the league’s name.
The commencement of the 2023/24 NPFL season, originally slated for Saturday, September 9 with a match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan, experienced another delay. This was attributed to what the board referred to as unforeseen exigencies around its sponsorship.
A new date for the kick-off is expected to be out soon.
Enyimba won the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) last season after finishing top of the Super 6 playoffs in Lagos.
