Team Nigeria recorded another major success at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday as para-athlete Goodness Nwachukwu shattered the world record to win gold in the Women’s Discus Throw F42-44/F61-64 event.
Nwachukwu produced a remarkable throw of 39.66 metres at Scotstoun Stadium, with the performance officially recognised as a new world record.
Competing under the para-athletics points system, the Nigerian amassed 1,130 points to secure the gold medal, finishing ahead of Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye, who threw 38.52 metres for 931 points, while Bree Cronin claimed bronze with 36.00 metres and 861 points.
Fellow Nigerian Destiny Agbo also delivered an impressive performance, achieving a personal best of 33.79 metres to finish fifth with 787 points.
The latest triumph further cements Nwachukwu’s reputation as one of the world’s leading para discus throwers. She previously set a world record and won Commonwealth gold at the Birmingham 2022 Games before extending her record to 39.66 metres in Glasgow.
Her victory earned Team Nigeria its seventh gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with more events still to come.
