Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis charged with misconduct by FA

The Football Association (FA) has charged Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis with misconduct following his team’s defeat to Fulham on 28 September.

According to the FA, Marinakis allegedly acted in an “improper” manner near the City Ground tunnel after the match.

The 57-year-old Greek businessman has until Monday, 7 October, to respond to the charge.

Forest’s 1-0 loss ended their unbeaten start to the season, with Fulham’s Raul Jimenez scoring from a 51st-minute penalty.

The penalty was awarded after referee Josh Smith, advised by the video assistant referee (VAR), reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor and concluded that Forest defender Murillo had scraped his studs down the back of Andreas Pereira’s calf.

Further frustration for Forest followed when VAR rejected penalty claims involving Anthony Elanga and Taiwo Awoniyi.

“We all want peace and for things to continue well, to not have to speak about the referees. But it was bad, wasn’t it?” Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said after the match.

“Let’s try to avoid [talking about officials] and give the referees peace. I think they are trying to improve, but today was not the best day.”

Nottingham Forest have had prior issues with VAR.

Following their 2-0 loss to Everton in April, the club stated that they had “warned” the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) that “the VAR official is a Luton fan, but they didn’t replace him.”

Forest currently sit 10th in the Premier League with nine points from six games and are set to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, 6 October.
