UEFA has officially announced that the 2026 Finalissima, initially scheduled for March 28th Beijing time, has been cancelled. The match was set to feature Spain, winners of UEFA Euro 2024, against Argentina, champions of the 2024 Copa América.
The Announcement
After extensive discussions between UEFA and the Qatari tournament organizers, it was confirmed today that, due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima – originally planned for Qatar on March 27th – cannot proceed as scheduled.
UEFA and the organizers expressed deep regret, noting that environmental and timing constraints made it impossible for the two teams to contest this prestigious intercontinental trophy in Doha. Qatar has, however, consistently proven its ability to host world-class international events at top-class venues.
UEFA extended sincere appreciation to the Qatari organizing committee and relevant authorities for their efforts and affirmed confidence that peace in the region will be restored soon.
The Finalissima, a collaboration between UEFA and CONMEBOL, brings together the European and South American champions to showcase elite international football. In 2022, the inaugural edition saw Argentina, then World Cup champions, defeat Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium in London.
UEFA explored alternative solutions within a very short timeframe to save the match. Despite the challenges of organizing such a high-profile fixture, none of the proposed options were accepted by Argentina.
The Failed Alternatives
Option 1: Keep the original date at Bernabéu Stadium, with 50% of tickets for each team’s fans. Approved by the venue but rejected by Argentina.
Option 2: Convert the Finalissima into a two-legged tie, with the first leg in Madrid on March 27th and the second in Buenos Aires at a date between the 2026 European and Copa América tournaments. Ticket allocation agreed, but rejected.
Option 3: Move the match to a neutral European venue on March 27th or reschedule to March 30th. Rejected as well.
Argentina proposed holding the match after the World Cup, but Spain’s schedule did not allow this. While Argentina was willing to play as late as March 31st, this date could not be accommodated.
Conclusion: UEFA regrets to announce that the 2026 Finalissima is cancelled.
UEFA expressed gratitude to Real Madrid, the Qatari organizing committee, and other relevant departments for their support in preparing for the tournament. Real Madrid, in particular, responded positively within a very short timeframe. UEFA also thanked the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) for their flexibility with all proposed solutions throughout the process.
