On February 12, the England national team confirmed that the Three Lions manager has agreed to a new deal to continue as head coach.

Official Statement

Thomas Tuchel has signed a new contract to lead England senior men through to UEFA EURO 2028 in the UK and Ireland.

After steering the unbeaten Three Lions to a record-setting qualification campaign for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, Tuchel has committed to remain in charge for two more years.

England completed the campaign without conceding a goal, scoring 20 in the process, and have now spent seven-and-a-half years ranked among the world’s top five teams.

Tuchel’s key backroom staff — Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilário, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne — have also extended their contracts until the summer of 2028.

These new deals provide stability and allow the England squad to concentrate fully on this summer’s World Cup. They also ensure continuity heading into the elite UEFA Nations League matches that follow shortly in September, with the draw scheduled for today [Thursday 12 February] in Brussels.

Just over a year later, England will embark on the crucial mission of qualifying for a historic European Championship on home soil, culminating in a final at Wembley Stadium.

Thomas Tuchel said: “I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup. It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud.

“I have had so much support from Mark, all my colleagues at the FA and from fans wherever I go that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job. EURO 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage.”

FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: “I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the EUROs in 2028. He was the right person for the job when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and has only strengthened his reputation across the qualifiers. We know the players are right behind him, and the togetherness within the group is there for all to see.

“There is simply no better candidate available in world football. With his big-game experience, knowledge and passion, he gives the squad the very best chance for success – this summer and with the once-in-a generation EURO being hosted on these shores in two years’ time.

“In Thomas, Anthony and the wider team, we have a perfect blend of English coaching and international expertise. Their full focus remains on doing as well as possible this summer, and by securing them early for 2028, we have taken away the potential distraction of contract renegotiations around the tournament.”

Tuchel took over as England head coach in January 2025 on an initial 18-month contract, having previously won numerous trophies with clubs such as Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. Notably, he guided the London club to European and world titles and was named UEFA and FIFA Men’s Coach of the Year in 2021 in recognition of his exceptional achievements in English football.
