Onana hospitalised after car accident in Turkey

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was taken to hospital for medical checks following a car accident in Turkey after Trabzonspor’s 2-0 victory over Hearts in the Conference League on Thursday.

The Cameroon international was reportedly hit from behind by another vehicle, with images from the scene appearing to show debris scattered around the crash site.

Onana was subsequently taken to hospital for examination but was later discharged after his medical results came back clear.

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan confirmed the incident and provided an update on the goalkeeper’s condition.

“Andre Onana was involved in a road traffic accident earlier this evening. There are no problems with him, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Dogan said, as reported by GOAL.

The 30-year-old has made an encouraging start to life at the Turkish club, where he is spending a second loan spell away from Manchester United.

Onana started Thursday’s victory over Hearts, which followed Trabzonspor’s 4-2 win against Finnish side KuPS. The result also marked his fourth clean sheet in five appearances for the club.

Trabzonspor have also enjoyed an impressive run of form in recent weeks, defeating Turkish giants Besiktas and Galatasaray by an aggregate score of 6-0.

The Turkish side are scheduled to face Rizespor in the league next Monday, giving Onana time to rest and recover before the fixture, subject to his condition following the accident.

Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for £43.8m but struggled to establish consistent form during his time at Old Trafford.

His position came under pressure following the arrival of goalkeeper Senne Lammens, prompting his temporary switch to Trabzonspor.

During his previous spell at Manchester United, Onana made 42 appearances and recorded six clean sheets.

However, his return to Trabzonspor has shown signs of improvement, with the goalkeeper already approaching that clean-sheet tally as the club maintains its positive start to the season.
