Orietal Derby: Crisis disrupts Rangers vs Enyimba match in Enugu

85

The NPFL Week 35 match between Rangers International Football Club of Enugu and Enyimba FC of Aba at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Sunday ended inconclusively after Enyimba fans disrupted the game in the final minutes.

Enyimba players refused to continue the match after a penalty was awarded to Rangers just minutes before the end.

The first half had ended goalless, and despite Rangers’ persistent efforts to score, they were repeatedly thwarted by Enyimba’s solid defense, missing numerous scoring opportunities.

Near the end of the game, Rangers were awarded a penalty when one of their attackers was fouled in the penalty area. Enyimba’s players and management protested the decision, withdrawing their players who had begun to confront the linesman.

Sensing a potential loss, Enyimba fans turned violent, throwing objects onto the pitch and eventually invading it. They also attacked the linesman who had alerted the referee to the penalty incident.

NPFL officials will now decide whether to award Rangers the three points, which would make them the league leaders with 64 points, or reschedule the completion of the remaining minutes of the game.

The match attracted a record crowd.
