Owners still trust me amid Liverpool slump – Slot

Liverpool FC manager Arne Slot has maintained that he still enjoys strong backing from the club’s owners, despite growing scrutiny following a downturn in results.

A run of poor performances has sparked concern among fans and analysts, with heavy losses and inconsistency denting the team’s hopes in both domestic and European competitions. The pressure mounted further after an FA Cup exit to Manchester City and a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

According to BBC Sport, Slot spoke after the PSG loss and stressed that he continues to have the confidence of the club’s leadership. He described the backing from owners and senior figures as “complete,” even during what he admitted is a difficult spell.

The Dutch coach also highlighted the role of supporters, noting that many have continued to show encouragement by staying behind after matches despite disappointing outcomes. He believes that unity between the players, staff, and fans will be key to improving results.

Still, the team’s form has placed them under real pressure. A string of defeats has affected their league position, while their European campaign remains uncertain. Concerns have also emerged about the squad’s mentality and consistency, with Slot previously acknowledging a lack of intensity in some displays.

Speculation over his future has begun, with Xabi Alonso among those reportedly linked to the job. However, for now, the club’s hierarchy appears willing to give Slot time to turn things around.

“I’m repeating myself a lot, but I feel a lot of support. Not only from the owners but from Richard [Hughes] and Michael [Edwards]. A lot of support from them, but as weird as it might sound, I also feel the support from the fans,” said Slot.

“In Paris, when the players went out for the warm-up, and after the 4-0 loss [against Manchester City], the fans immediately started singing ‘we love Liverpool’.

“I think it’s fair to say we were outplayed for 90 minutes, and they were still singing and clapping for us.

“I’ve said it many times, the club knows the period of time we’re in, and in the meantime, I feel complete support.”

Looking ahead, Slot described the defeat to PSG as motivation during a “defining” phase of the season, starting with a crucial fixture against Fulham.

“We faced the champions of Europe, and we experienced that we were not on the level we should have been.

“The good thing is we have four or five days to show we can be much more competitive. It also tells us we want to keep improving and playing at that level next season.

“I think if you experienced that two days ago, you want to be involved next season to show we can do even better. Therefore, we have to perform in the league as well.”
