Brazil, the defending champions, were unable to secure qualification for the men’s Olympic football tournament. Their hopes were dashed with a 1-0 loss to Argentina, allowing their rivals to advance to Paris 2024.

For the first time since 2004, Brazil, who aimed for a third consecutive gold medal, will be absent from the Olympic football tournament.

In the South American qualifying tournament for this summer’s Olympics in France, Luciano Gondou scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute for Argentina’s Under-23 team.

Brazil has claimed a men’s football medal in each of the past four Olympics.

Argentina, champions in 2004 and 2008, concluded the final qualifying event with five points, one ahead of Paraguay.

Paraguay faced Venezuela later on Sunday in a match that determined the other qualifying spot, with Brazil finishing the tournament with three points.
