Pele was laid to rest in his final resting place on Tuesday, as millions of fans in Brazil and around the world paid their respects to the sports legend.
The stadium where Pelé spent the majority of his career, Vila Belmiro, was visited by newly inaugurated President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Pele was being laid to rest in the city where he grew up, became famous, and helped turn into a global sports capital. Before the black casket was driven through the streets of Santos in a firetruck, a mass was held at the Vila Belmiro stadium.
It was taken into the cemetery as bands played the Santos team’s official song, and a Catholic hymn. Before the golden-wrapped casket arrived, attendees sang samba songs that Pelé had liked.
