Francisco Conceição scored a late winner as Portugal rallied from a goal down to defeat the Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 opener in Leipzig.

Roberto Martinez’s side, considered one of the tournament favorites after a flawless qualifying campaign, left it late to overcome their determined opponents.

The Czech Republic had spent much of the game on the defensive but shocked Portugal when Lukáš Provod’s powerful second-half strike found the far corner.

However, their hopes of an upset were quickly dashed when goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk parried Nuno Mendes’ header, causing the ball to deflect off Robin Hranáč into his own net.

Diogo Jota had a goal disallowed for offside late in the match, but Portugal celebrated in stoppage time when Conceição found the net.

This goal ensured Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo marked his record sixth European Championship appearance with a memorable victory.

Portugal show determination to push for win

Portugal entered the tournament in good form, fueling optimism among their sizable fanbase in Leipzig that they could replicate their success from the 2016 European Championship.

Their confidence seemed justified as they asserted dominance from the beginning of the match, keeping the Czech Republic on the defensive.

However, despite their control of possession, Portugal struggled to convert their opportunities into scoring chances, and those they did create were expertly handled by goalkeeper Stanek.

Ronaldo played a central role in Portugal’s offensive efforts. While he was somewhat subdued in general play, he had two notable chances in the first half, both of which were thwarted by the Czech keeper.

As the match progressed, Ronaldo’s trademark free-kick was tame, and he was later flagged offside when Jota converted his cross, indicating it might not be his or Portugal’s night.

Nonetheless, they displayed the resilience that their supporters believe will carry them far in Germany, securing the three points deep into stoppage time.

In a recurring theme of the tournament, it was another emerging talent who clinched the victory, as 21-year-old substitute Conceição hammered home from close range.
