Premier League clubs vote in favour of keeping VAR

Premier League clubs have voted 19-1 in favor of retaining video assistant referees (VAR) for the next season.

Wolves initiated a vote on the use of VAR for the 2024-25 season by formally submitting a resolution to the Premier League in May.

For VAR to be abolished, 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs would have needed to vote in favor of the proposal.

However, Wolves were the only club to support the proposal, receiving no backing from other top-flight clubs.

Wolves said they were “disappointed with the outcome of the vote” but welcomed the Premier League’s “commitment to improve VAR”.

The Premier League has faced increasing pressure to modify VAR, which was introduced at the start of the 2019-20 season.

Wolves provided nine reasons to support their proposal to ban VAR, citing issues such as the impact on goal celebrations, hostility towards match officials, and the length of time needed to reach decisions.

At the meeting, it was reaffirmed that semi-automated offsides will be introduced at some point in the autumn, and the Premier League confirmed that in-game VAR announcements will be implemented.

These announcements, used during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, will allow referees to explain post-VAR decisions to supporters in stadiums.

Additionally, the Premier League stated that the “high threshold” for VAR officials to intervene in subjective on-field decisions will be maintained.

Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters’ Association, emphasized that “enormous changes” are needed to the current system because fans “cannot carry on like this.”
