Liverpool and Arsenal drew 2-2 in a thrilling game at Anfield, blowing the Premier League title race wide open thanks to a late header from Roberto Firmino for Liverpool.
With their first victory at Anfield since 2012, the league-leading Gunners appeared to have passed the most difficult test of their title credentials. Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus scored in a decisive first 28 minutes.
At halftime, Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool hope, but his missed penalty in the second half appeared to have delivered Arsenal the victory they needed to regain their eight-point advantage atop the table.
Three minutes from time, however, Liverpool’s tenacity was rewarded when Firmino, an enemy of Arsenal, headed in a goal to tie the score. This was his 11th Premier League goal against the Gunners.
Aaron Ramsdale, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, made two outstanding stops to deny Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate the opportunity to win the game in stoppage time as Arsenal clung to their first point at Anfield in seven years, which might be crucial to their chances of winning the league.
The fact that Arsenal’s seven-game winning streak came to an end will only inspire champions Manchester City, who have played one fewer game than Arsenal and will host them on April 26 at the Etihad Stadium. Arsenal still leads the Premier League standings by six points and still controls their own destiny.
