Premier League misses fifth Champions League spot

The Premier League will not secure a fifth Champions League spot for the next season.

Borussia Dortmund’s win against PSG on Wednesday and Bayern Munich’s draw with Real Madrid on Tuesday have elevated Germany’s total in the European Performance Spots table to 18.356. Even if Aston Villa wins both legs of their Europa Conference League semi-final against Olympiakos and captures the title, England’s score will only reach 18.25.

Consequently, Germany will secure a fifth automatic entry for next season’s Champions League, joining Italy.

Both countries could potentially have six teams in the competition if Dortmund captures the Champions League title and finishes outside the Bundesliga’s top four, and if either Atalanta or Roma secures the Europa League.

Champions of these tournaments automatically qualify for the next season’s Champions League, adding extra places regardless of the usual qualification processes.

Interestingly, Dortmund stands to benefit regardless of their Champions League outcome, as they are poised to end the season fifth in the Bundesliga.
