Premier League referee to wear camera in match
For the first time in a Premier League match, a referee will wear a video camera during Monday evening’s game between Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
Jarred Gillett will be equipped with a head-mounted device known as a ‘RefCam’. However, the footage captured will not be broadcast live.
The video will be featured in a special program designed to provide insights into officiating in the Premier League.
In a similar instance, Bundesliga referee Daniel Schlager wore a camera and microphone during a 2-2 draw between Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg in February. This footage was utilized in a program titled ‘Referees Mic’d up – Bundesliga’.
Last year, Premier League referee Rob Jones also wore a camera during a 2023 Summer Series match between Chelsea and Brighton in Philadelphia.
Additionally, the Football Association trialed the use of bodycams in adult grassroots football last year as part of an initiative to decrease the level of abuse directed at officials at that level.
