Paris Saint Germain (PSG), French Ligue 1 side, have suspended Lionel Messi for allegedly embarking on an unapproved trip to Saudi Arabia.

Messi, who has an ambassadorial role with the oil-rich Arabian country, was said to have been there on commercial duties.

The suspension comes on the back of poor performances by the French capital club’s players, including Messi, who featured in an embarrassing 3-1 loss to Lorient on Sunday.

According to BBC, despite the fact that the club’s hierarchy did not approve the trip, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner left France for Saudi Arabia.

The decision has landed the 35-year-old forward a two-week ban.

The Barcelona and Argentina legend is set to miss matches against Troyes and Ajaccio.

Messi, who joined the club two years ago, is coming to the expiration of his two-year contract in June, and there are indications the World Cup winner will not sign an extension.

He has scored 31 goals and secured 34 assists in 71 matches for the Paris club.

He could win the French League title with PSG who have a five-point lead at the top of the league with five matches left to play.
