Marcus Rashford is a significant doubt for Barcelona’s return to Camp Nou against Athletic Bilbao, having missed the team’s last two training sessions.
The forward, on loan from Manchester United, will have to wait to realise his Camp Nou dream as Barcelona prepare for their historical homecoming on Saturday.
The stadium had been undergoing major renovations since 2023, forcing Barcelona to play home matches at the Olympic Stadium. Government officials have now approved their return to the Catalan venue.
Despite the excitement surrounding the club’s comeback, Rashford may not feature. He was absent from training on Thursday and missed the follow-up session on Friday.
Spanish reports indicate that he visited the club’s training ground to seek permission from manager Hansi Flick to be absent again, reportedly due to a ‘personal issue’.
Flick confirmed that Rashford is a doubt because of illness. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, he said, “Marcus has a fever and hasn’t been able to train yesterday or today. I have doubts about him playing tomorrow.
“But the good news is that Raphinha is back, and I really appreciate what he brings to the team. We’ll see tomorrow, but the important thing is that he’s back. He’ll start on the bench, though.”
If Rashford is sidelined this weekend, his debut at Camp Nou for Barcelona could be postponed. Their next home fixture is against Alaves following an away Champions League match at Chelsea.
Rashford shared his excitement about playing at the stadium, saying, **”It’s a very nice feeling. It’s a beautiful stadium and when it is full it’s going to be unbelievable.
“Camp Nou was always one of my favourite stadiums and one I wanted to play in. But to play on it for Barcelona is going to be a different feeling. I cannot wait to be on the pitch. I will enjoy it.”**
On the club’s return, Flick added, **“We are all delighted to be back at our stadium. The opponent is obviously very good.
“They are a team that plays in the Champions League, with a lot of quality. It is a very good opportunity to gauge our current situation.”**
Since joining Barcelona, Rashford has scored six goals in 16 appearances.
