Rice sent off as Arsenal held to draw by Brighton

A second-half goal from Joao Pedro helped Brighton come from behind to secure a draw after Arsenal’s Declan Rice was sent off in an eventful match in north London.

The Gunners appeared poised to maintain their perfect start to the season when Bukayo Saka set up Kai Havertz, who chipped Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton goal for the opening score in the 38th minute.

However, the game took a dramatic turn when Declan Rice was shown a second yellow card in the 49th minute for delaying a free-kick by Joel Veltman. The Brighton defender was fortunate not to receive a card himself.

With the man advantage, Brighton increased the pressure and equalized in the 58th minute when Yankuba Minteh’s shot was parried by David Raya into the path of Pedro, who calmly slotted the ball under the keeper.

Havertz had a chance to regain the lead for Arsenal when he was through on goal, but his effort was saved by Verbruggen. Later, Brighton substitute Yasin Ayari saw his shot saved by Raya.

Brighton continued to press for a winner and introduced their new £39.5 million signing, Georginio Rutter, in search of a decisive moment, but he mistimed a header as they were unable to find the breakthrough.

Player of the Match: J. Veltman.
