Romania topped Group E, with both Romania and Slovakia advancing to the last 16 at Euro 2024 following an entertaining draw in Frankfurt.
Ondrej Duda gave Slovakia a 24th-minute lead, heading in a precise cross from Juraj Kucka after slipping behind the Romanian defense.
Both teams displayed strong attacking intent, and Romania equalized before halftime when Razvan Marin blasted a penalty into the top corner, following David Hancko’s foul on Ianis Hagi in the box.
Romania secured the top spot, with Belgium finishing second after a draw with Ukraine, who were eliminated.
Slovakia advanced as one of the best third-placed teams and could face England in the last 16.
Their exact opponents will be confirmed after the final Group F fixtures, which take place this evening at 20:00 BST.
This marked the first time in Euros history that all four teams in a group ended with the same points.
Romania reach last 16 for first time in over two decades
Hagi was not yet two years old the last time Romania reached the knockout stages of a European Championship in 2000.
His clever move inside the box earned Romania a penalty against Slovakia, and he was active throughout his 67 minutes on the pitch, sending a rebound over the bar from Andrei Ratiu’s curled shot.
Marin’s 30-yard free-kick narrowly missed the target, while Denis Dragus pulled a shot past the post as Romania sought a second goal.
Slovakia also aimed for victory, with David Strelec’s shot from inside the box being saved by Florin Nita’s feet, and Lukas Haraslin’s low strike curling just wide of the post.
Duda’s goal made him the first player to score for Slovakia in two major international tournaments, having also netted against Wales in Euro 2016.
There was a celebratory atmosphere at full-time for both sets of fans and players as their Euro campaigns continued.
Romania boss Edward Iordanescu was pleased that his team advanced from their group, cheered on by many jubilant fans.
“I believed in the players from the very beginning. We have potential and personality. We have found the spirit that we must never lose,” he said.
“We were losing again but we came back with intelligence, heart and balance. We have written history. This is the generation of soul. It is a fantastic generation.
“Virtually the whole stadium was yellow. Thank you to everyone here and everyone at home in Romania. I’m sure they are all celebrating and will be proud.“
